The Diagnostic Significance of Aspiration Biopsy of the Parietal Pleura

Abstract
The aspiration biopsy of the parietal pleura as an aid In the etiologic diagnosis of
pleural effusion performed in 40 cases during Sept. 1958 to Aug. 1959.
1) Results of 40 pleural biopsies are reported and compared with the other available
diagnostic methods including chemical, cytologic and bacteriologic analysis of fluid.
2) In 40 cases in which this procedure was utilized, diagnostic tissue was obtained in
72.5 percent and specific diagnosis in 52.5 percent.
3) The aspiration biopsy was of considerable value in a group of patient classified
clinically as "undeterminate", giving a definite tissue diagnosis percent.
4) In 17 cases with pleural effusion suspected of tuberculous, aspiration biopsy of the
paris pleura diagnostic tissue was obtained in 47 percent.
5) The literature on pleural biopsy has briefly reviewed and summary of previously
reported results are compared with our result
6) There is definite need thor additional diagnostic procedure to establish the etiology
pleural effusion.
7) The aspiration biopsy of the parietal pleura is a safe, easy and accurate method a
may be considerably valuable in obtaining early diagnosis.
